Artistic director Lindsey Butcher set up Gravity & Levity in 2003 to develop the creative potential of aerial dance. It presents work that re-defines what and where a dance floor can be - both for the audience and the performers - and offers an alternative perspective on traditional aesthetics in dance and circus.
Alongside touring productions, Gravity & Levity undertake specially commissioned indoor and outdoor aerial performance. Lindsey Butcher also choreographs for a number of other companies including Dream Engine, Scarabeus and Stomp’s Lost & Found Orchestra. The company has a comprehensive programme of educational activity including aerial dance workshops and residencies.
SHIFT is an evening of aerial performance fusing contemporary dance, circus and live music in a sculptural set designed by Mish Weaver. The performance is a triple bill of work choreographed by Charlotte Vincent, Charles Linehan and Luke Cresswell & Steve McNicholas with live and composed soundtrack by Daniel Weaver.
TAKING
FLIGHT toured
the UK in 2005. Individual works from this production remaining in the companies
repertoire are:
Why?
(20 mins) - a driven and fierce aerial dance duet on a vertical wall. Power
and strength are juxtaposed with ease and surrender. Performed indoors or
outdoors.
Reinventing the Wheel (20 mins) - Propelled in a giant wheel,
two dancers are lifted into seemingly impossible moments of suspension forcing
split second timing, sensitive counterbalance, play and a huge amount of trust.
