Rotozaza
comprises the artistic team of Ant Hampton and Silvia Mercurali. The company's
current project Etiquette invites the audience to immerse
themselves in an all-consuming theatrical experience; exposing human communication
at both its rawest and most delicate, as participants explore the difficulty
of turning their thoughts into words they can trust.
A young girl and
an old man lead audiences into several micro-situations, often borrowed from
film or theatre, wherein the private worlds shared between two people split
and reform incessantly.
Etiquette offers the fantasy of speaking with someone without having to plan what to say, and the resulting thrill of disowning responsibility in a performance situation. Conversation is shown to be a kind of theatre whereby 'audience' and 'actor' roles are imperceptibly assumed and exchanged.
All
this is achieved with an extreme of Rotozaza's usual economy of means: two
stereo headphones and a few small objects. With Etiquette,
Rotozaza have attained their long-held dream of creating an entirely pre-recorded
and infinitely portable piece of live theatre, available for translation into
any language.
Etiquette is available for UK and international touring, as well
as outreach activity including workshops.
