The company returns to the UK, following two years of international touring, including current visits to Perth and Adelaide Festivals.

One Step Forward, One Step Back is a brand new site-specific promenade performance commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company for Liverpool – European Capital of Culture 2008.

This world premiere takes place at the city’s magnificent Anglican Cathedral and uses Liverpool’s vibrant cityscape as its backdrop and
weaves a magical journey through the building, taking small groups into areas never seen before by the public. Inspired by Dante’s Paradiso and William Blake’s poem Milton, the production responds uniquely to the Cathedral’s interior, whilst looking out to the city beyond and asking the question: What is Paradise?

One Step Forward, One Step Back will be created in collaboration with an impressive team of 60 local performers, designers and technicians and performed, drawn from a variety of communities throughout the city.

Etiquette is a half-hour experience for two people in a public space. There is no-one watching - other people in the cafe or bar are not aware of it. You wear headphones which tell you what to say to each other, or to use one of the objects positioned to the side. There is a kind of magic involved - for it to work you just need to listen and respond accordingly. Best done with someone you know, someone to share this with.

Etiquette exposes human communication at both its rawest and most delicate and explores the difficulty of turning our thoughts into words we can trust. A young girl and an old man lead the participants into several micro-situations, often borrowed from film or theatre, wherein the private worlds shared between two people split and reform incessantly.

Contemporary dance, aerial circus and physical theatre collide in a multilayered, visceral thrill as artistic director Lindsey Butcher’s acclaimed Gravity & Levity once again returns to upend the dance floor. SHIFT rekindles the creative energy first ignited by the rich mix of collaborators for its previous production Taking Flight.

This latest work brings Stomp co-creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas alongside two formidable choreographic talents – the intensely physical Charlotte Vincent (Vincent Dance Theatre) and sublimely lyrical Charles Linehan – to form an extraordinary triple bill programme.

SHIFT is co-commissioned by ROH2 at The Royal Opera House, The Corn Exchange, Newbury and Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster and is supported by Arts Council England.
